Blackacre,
I was an architecture major at Auburn, and the artistic worth of my efforts was not nearly as important as my defense of them.
It was Socratic to a fine degree.
"Why did you choose this shape for the site?"
"Why did you put the conference room between the receptionist and the Boss?"
A couple points. I thought this line of questioning unfair at the time, but I now know it was entirely real-world.
Some of the questions had no empirical answer. They were designed to make me explain my design. To make me ensure that my designs were not random, but well considered.
I saw poor design that was well defended. I thought this unfair. It was, but that is the way of the world. Art must be explained, defended, and made relevant.
So must intellect. Often, poor intellect is well defended, at least on the surface. But intellect, unlike art, will surface eventually. Such is the beauty of science, of philosophy, of engineering, of rhetoric.
What is most important is our appreciation of truth. Especially truth to the contrary of experience and expectation.

I always favored Bullwinkle's alma mater, Watsamatta U.

At the time I was working on my doctorate at UA there was an interesting phenomenon. An undergraduate's rights were spelled out in the catalog. A doctoral candidate had no rights! Since this was a long time ago, this may have changed.

I just got to pay apartment rent (30 minutes in line) and pick up medicine at the drugstore and fun things like that. The guys had the fun of getting the car washed and other more manly things. The tension of having no rights was the real kicker!
