On Jackson Highway in sheffield, next to the old Bunyan's barbecue location, is a new establishment called "Itchiban Japanese Grill." They were putting up the sign when I drove by today. I'v never had Japanese. Maybe it will be good. Anyone else heard of this place?

Much Japanese cooking is characterized by the use of the hibatchi. Yes, Interventor, you PR0BABLY meant sushi! On the other hand you have PROBABLY eaten hibatchi grilled food in Tokyo- as have I! The lack of knowledge displayed in TB's post is deplorable!

I love Japanese food. If you've never tried it, go give it a shot. One of my favorite treats is to go out for some really good sushi.

They have one in Tupelo--it usually has a good crowd--never been there so I wouldn't know how good the food is. Glad to see a new place coming to the Shoals Smiler

Ichiban is a chain that I first patronized in Birmingham (Hoover) and then in Chattanooga. In my opinion Itchiban is better than Shogun and should never be mentioned with Harvest Buffet or anything like that. It would be like mentioning comparing Georges with Krystal or the $5.00 buffet.

Ichibans is a quality Japanese restaurant and I hope continues with the quality that they have in their Birmingham (Hoover) location. For anyone that likes Japanese cooking (performed on a flat grille right in front of you, at your table) then Ichiban is a great place to find it. If Ichiban is indeed coming and opens here then it will be a bad omen for Osaka, which is in KMart's shopping center. Even if you haven't tried Japanese then Ichiban is a great place to try. I'll be there opening day if I can find out when that is. To me this is like hearing that we are getting a Longhorn Steakhouse or Hooters or even Steak & Shake .. granted not in the same venue as the above. Thanks for the news I'll be looking for it.

TB,

It must be marvelous to like a live content free. Yes, I meant hibatchi, the flat grill that japanese style cooks use to cook steaks, shrimp, chicken, etc.

I've eaten at hibatchi grills for years in the US, Japan and Korea. One of my favorite'ss used to be Rocky Aioki's chain -- Benihana. They have a suchi bar, as well. I used to go to the two in Atlanta for years during happy hour.

Itchiban means "number one," or the best, in Japanese. If the personnel are really Japanese, for best service, I suggest men use the masculine Japanese dialect.

At the one in Vestavia, most of the workers are Korean. Still, the food is very good.
