Ha - got your attention, didn't I?

OK, so I am making a "pizza cake" for my daughter's birthday this year. I am having a few challenges, because my kiddo is a vegetarian. So nothing with gelatin in it (no Skittles, marshmallows, gummi bears, etc).

What is a Pizza Cake? It is a cake, that looks like a pizza. Her party is at the local pizza place, so the cake is going to fit the theme. I'm going to make 3 white layers 12" each and then instead of stacking them and frosting them like a traditional layer cake, I'm going to frost each of them to look like a pizza.

So far I'm going to frost them with buttercream and then sponge on some watered down brown food coloring so it looks crusty. Then I'm going to use 100% natural Smuckers Strawberry preserves for the sauce. I'll melt shaved white chocolate for the cheese. Now I need help!!!! What to do for toppings??? One of the pizza cakes will be plain cheese, so that is done. The second with be pepperoni and I'm going to use fruit leather for those, so that one is done. The third one is going to be supreme... what can I use for mushrooms, sausages, red peppers, green peppers, onions, black olives, and all the other yummy pizza toppings? Hurry - the party is Sunday!

There is a chocolate sausage recipe on the internet. it would take a little while but can be done tomorrow and be ready. Just google 'chocolate sausage' recipe. Apple peelings for the peppers? Leave enough flesh on real thin strips- rounded and smashed caramels for the mushroomms? Just brainstorming! Ameringue cookie recipe is often used by caterers to form mushrooms. again, nothing but time really needed. this is fun - I'll keep trying, but I can visualize (and taste) the pizza now!

Ok here may be the catch... I don't know how well all theses topping will taste together but here are a few ideas.
Black olives- whopper malt balls
green peppers - use greem apples and but very slinder pieces with the peel still on it and lay them on the "pizza" with peel up. u could do the same for red peppers but use red apples instead

Let me think about the others. I know you're in a hurry so I'll try and get back with ya asap!

If she is a vegan the chocolate sausage will not work since it contains eggs(allrecipes website) Also the meringue. You could melt chocolate chips and add lots of ground almonds or nuts for sausage. Again, use the buterscotch or caramels for the mushrooms. The very darkest chocolate bar for the olives.

Marshmallow mushrooms, with food writer pen details, if you like. I've been playing with rolled, then shaped, Starburst candies, which you can also color by brushing on diluted food coloring or using the food pens. Sliced licorice for black olives. Ummm, thinking...

Ya'll have such great ideas! Thanks! I love the idea of using the apple peels for the peppers and the crushed almonds & chocolate for the sausage.

She can eat Starburst jellybeans (they are vegan) but not the Starburst candies (they have gelatin in them). She does eat eggs and drink milk, so the caramels and meringue are both fine Smiler I wonder if there is another candy that you can squish and mold like a Starburst, but that is vegetarian? There is always marzipan, but I don't like the taste of it - or fondant. Hmmmm...

Keep the fabulous ideas coming and I'll post pics as I start baking!

So, a vegetarian party at a PIZZA place. Oh well, I've heard stranger things.

Almond paste would be your best bet. Create a Cake in Muscle Shoals should have it. It has the consistency of play-doh but doesn't dry out like fondant does. You can dye the paste what ever color you want, roll it, ball it or whatever your wish. You can make your black olives and green vegetables out of it to stick on the 'pizza'. You can do baked 'meringues' where you make the stems and caps separately. Once they've hardened enough to handle, you should be able to move them off the pan and place them on the cake, put the stems and caps together with frosting. Meringues take about 2 hours to bake at 200º. Fondant would suit better for the black olives since almond paste doesn't take black as well as fondant.

Why don't you just make 1 'pizza' cake for your daughter to enjoy and use the much easier methods on the other 2 cakes for the other kids to enjoy? Your daughter does eat eggs, right? Cake is loaded with eggs.

It's my money. I worked for it and do not like to be cheated out of it.

You can make anything out of fondant but here are some other ideas. Best ones are at the end.

You could make sausage out of small peanut butter balls using chunky style peanut butter. The effect might take some imagination. You could use red licorice for red peppers or fruit roll ups cut to shape. Black olives could be made with black licorice straws, but I'm not sure about the taste.

My best ideas so far are to use confectioner's sugar for parmesan cheese. Put it out in a Parm shaker bottle! Use red Nerds for the crushed red pepper topping.

I googled licorice and the ingredients would have to be evaluated by TSC to make sure they are admissible. Some state gelatin, and others list ingredients that might be Lord knows what! LOL! (BTW, you should read what is in the swine flu vaccine!I am opting out!) TSC, be sure to post pictures of your cakes!

OB, I'll make an exception for you - just this ONE time though.

I am wondering - why is it weird to have a vegetarian's bday party at a pizza place??? That is the easiest kind of restaurant for her to find stuff to eat! Cheese pizza, pizza with mushrooms, black olives, green olives, green peppers, red peppers, onions, tempeh, mushrooms, pineapples, tomatoes, eggplant, spinach...

And she eats eggs and drinks milk - just nothing with dead animals in it. She's vegetarian, not vegan.
