RE: http://www.timesdaily.com/arti...2/ARTICLES/911025026
This quote is interesting: "It really just mirrors what's often done in the workplace, where cell phones can only be used on breaks. Essentially, these kids in class are on their jobs, and in the hallways and at lunch they're on break." I've found that cell phones in the workplace are a constant companion vs. something used during breaks only. |

I think that is mostly dependant on where one works. ___________________ The world is a vampire. |

Typical.....
Lauderdale board of Education is stupid. Please explain why we spend thousands of dollars on filters on computers at the schools, but we allow cell phones that can access the internet with no filters what so ever. I think it's time to clean house, bye Mr. Valentine your an idiot. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories...ay/main5051909.shtml http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351171,00.html This message has been edited. 1. Text messaging is NOT the internet. Even if phones were banned you can't stop kids from taking pictures of themselves and sending it to their friends in their own time. That's the parent's responsibility.
2. It's You're an idiot. |

Lauderdale Board of Education has allow the elementary schools to have cell phones as well.
I see kids as young as 2nd graders talking and texting. Please explain why a 5th grader needs a phone. We are playing with fire. |

What they do with their own time is their business and their parents responsibilty to monitor what they are doing, and most parents today don't take the responsibilty they should. But this article is about phones at school. Please research what really is happening, you don't have a clue. Many school districts completely banned phones at school because students abused them, sent pictures, cheated, harrassed other students. I have no problem with high school kids having a phone, just not letting them use it while school is in session. This message has been edited. Last edited by: BIG ORANGE, |

My kids attend Central and it has not been a problem for them. I think it is prob one of the smarter things that the board has done. In previous years kids was sent to ISS if they seen the kids with a phone or even if it droppped out of their pocket. I think most kids are going to follow the rules on when and where they are allowed to use their cell phones.

I don't have a clue because I realize that the pictures are going to get sent even if the phones are banned? When I went to school cellphones weren't as prevalent but we still cheated by putting answers in our calculator's memory, good old notes, and so forth. Harassment and bullying existed as well. Just because you do not see a reason for students to have a phone does not meant that other parent's don't. A lot of the places you mentioned that banned the phones also got a lot of push back from parent's afraid of not being able to reach their child in emergencies, or during after school activities and so forth. Again, preventing student's from having the phone is not going to stop sexting. If you really are concerned about it, don't get text messaging, or data service on the kid's phone, and pretty much every phone provider has ways where parents can monitor what the kids are sending or viewing on their phones. All I'm saying is that preventing this is not a magic bullet to stop the problem |

I can see a phone for after school for high school, but not during. The things you mention are true, but why give them a device that adds to the problem. I remeber when pagers were banned, what is the difference. It's just a matter of time when something bad happens, all schools in this area have reported small incidents that were minor. But tell the parents to the 6th grade girl in IL that cell phones need to be in school. She was forced to strip and her picture was taken and sent. Don't say it will not happen here. Kids will be kids. I remeber when my parents needed me, they called the school office. Keep them in the cars, etc., but allowing them to carry and use them during school is asking for trouble. |

I think it is good that they are trying this. Give the kids a chance to show that they can follow rules.
A school system near where I live has the zero tolerance policy for cell phones and it hasn't worked very well. I would rather have this more lax policy and then punish the people who abuse the privilege rather than have kids being suspended because they had a cell phone, turned off, in a purse or backpack. |

I think that, for once, the Lauderdale County BOE has actually made a wise decision. Certain school systems (which shall remain nameless) have teachers who spend way too much time worrying about silly things like cell phones, to the expense of teaching the course of study. Students are going to have phones, no matter what the rules. My own children had them when they were in school. I'd guess that 95% of students have cell phones on their person or in a purse. The other 5% have already had them confiscated or have lost them. In education -- as in most aspects of life -- you have to pick your battles. For me, this ain't one of them.

Bottom line....The test scores for Alabama are very low compared to others. So our BOE has decided if a student owns a phone they get to use it during school. So if their failing they still get to text their buddies how dumb they are. He or she could be going over their notes for their next class. The students are spending valuable time texting instead of reading and learning. Don't give me they need a phone, most everyone went through school without a phone and made it just fine. A cell phone for a kid is nothing more than a social tool. One day this will blow up in the BOE face and they will have a tougher time defending why this child was exposed and why they allowed this to happen.

I'm so tired of this argument every time something comes up about teens and cell phones. Yes, I made it through high school without a cell phone just fine. THIRTY YEARS AGO!!! If I had car trouble, I wasn't afraid to flag down the next car and ask for help. Do I want my 16 y/o daughter standing on the side of the road waving for anyone and everyone to stop? I don't think so. I remember several times when band practice was over early, and we just sat around talking until our parents got there. Do I want my 14 year old sitting outside the band room for over an hour because they got through early before I come to pick him up at the previously agreed on time? No, I don't. I will agree to rules such as leaving them turned off in a backpack, or in the car for students that drive, but to across the board say that cell phones are just for social purposes and teens don't need them doesn't cut it with me. |

Maybe we could just let the smart kids have cell phones. |

Leave the cell phones put away until school is over. Understand the need for band and extra cirricular activities. CNN did a report that was very interesting, 85% of teen phone usage is to other teens, 10% parents the other 5% other activities. This includes texting. You will not win the argument that the phone is not a social tool.
