It seems to me that this kind of issue has come up before. I do believe that off duty police officers are considered "on duty" if they witness a crime in progress.
Sassy, why does it have to be a personal vendetta? Do you know this guy? Maybe he's just got more back bone than other people do, maybe he saw or heard something that he didn't agree with, or didn't think was ethicle , and according to the Times Daily he went through the right channels. Looks like to me that this guy was doing what he thought was the right thing to do, and he had the back bone to go through with it. Sassy you know yourself in your line of work, complaints are made on officers all the time, but when it comes down to putting something in writing then nobody wants to do that cause they are scared..! This man wasn't and I commend him for that. I know some people in the CENTRAL VOL. FIRE DEPT. and I have heard them say that the deputy doing the chasing was wrong, they prob. won't say it now because they would be scared of Lovelace kicking them out of the F.D. And the only reason Lovelace is saying anything is because he's scarred that the S.O. want help him direct traffic. He's spineless just like the Sheriff...
Seems like the VFD in our community never support their own! Way to go Mr. Lovelace!
They rarely do when involves a personal vendetta.
It could just be his opinion. I straddle two fences that can get people killed I fly wide body airliners and I am also a LEO. Would it be OK for me to look the other way if I suspect another pilot is drunk with 300 passengers on board? On the other hand if someone especially a peer thinks a LEO might not have followed procedure or contributed to a accident say something? I for one am sick of both profession's covering for our 3% of bad apples. In the end it only tarnishes the dedication and professionalism of the good 97%. That being said this is my opinion and I do not know what the local municipalities rules are governing off duty ops or chases. If the deputy did no wrong he should not be thrown under the bus nor should he just get a by.

I will not elaborate...but the scuttlebutt is that there is history that indicates the complainant may have a bone to pick with LCSO.
Q: Have you heard about McDonalds new Obama Value Meal? A: Order anything you like and the next guy in line has to pay for it.
