A well written but it should be pointed out that this "report" from the IOM has a lot more flaws than just exposure measurements. This big IOM report simply took a dozen small studies, almost ALL of which have severe defects in their design and data, and just lumped all these little pieces of garbage together into one big pile of garbage. You can't build a good house from defective bricks, no matter how many bricks you use.
Smoking bans are built on lies, and once you see the lies they fall apart. Read about their lies at: www.TheTruthIsALie.com and in the AfterComments to Jacob Grier's column at: http://www.jacobgrier.com/blog/archives/2210.html Michael J. McFadden, Author of "Dissecting Antismokers Brains" |

You can't argue with business being better for the restaurants that went non-smoking.

....but, he will. Apparently in Michael J. McFadden land, smoking is healthy and the rest of us are just crazy. And we know the website links he posts are on the up and up. |

Well, Wip, if that's what smokers have to do to justify their oral fixations, then so be it.

Actually Prose, I never argue anything that isn't true. Restaurants nowadays for the most part do not get strongly hit by bans. A few that might have actually still been "smokey" before a ban might even see their business improve. That was the trick behind one of the recent big lies put out by the antismoking lobby and headlined in dozens (hundreds?) of news outlets: "Smoking Bans Do Not Hurt Bar And Restaurant Employment."
Researchers wanted a half million dollar grant, promised the "right" ban-supporting results (nothing new really, but for this one I got the documentation on it), juggled the data, and then pulled a Bill Clinton by slipperly defining the word "And" to mean what they wanted it to mean. You can read the slimy story about it in the AfterComments to Jacob Grier's column at: http://www.jacobgrier.com/blog/archives/2210.html Restaurants aren't hurt so bad. Bars are literally decimated. Prose, read those AfterComments and if you have anything to criticize please feel free to come back and do so. Unlike the Antis, I always try to return to defend my work. Michael J. McFadden Author of "Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" P.S. You'll find the links there go to places like the National Institute of Health, Minnesota's state antismoking grant institution (ClearWay Minnesota), and the journal of the Public Library of Science. Do those meet your Irish standards? |

McFadden,
Okay. So there are people involved in the smoking ban debate who only care about money or the politics of the issue. Smoking is still an unhealthy habit for the smoker and the second-hand inhaler. Nothing changes that fact. |

Prose, I agree it's an unhealthy habit for the smoker, and I'd even agree that in sufficient concentrations it's unhealthy for the long term health of the nonsmoker. I do NOT believe however that the concentrations that would normally be experienced in any modern decently ventilated bar or restaurant would hit those levels though.

Pete, I didn't write the article. But I did enjoy breakfast at Waffle House over the weekend. It was nice not to breathe smoke while I ate a runny fried egg.
You just go on down to Smokehouse and smoke all you want. Make that a double! |

Hey.. if you're eatin at the Waffle House... 2 things... health, not high on your priority list, 2nd... that's an American institution. You should expect ashes IN YOU EGGS....much less second hand smoke. I LOVE THE WAFFLE HOUSE!! I may go get me a waffle and enjoy a puff between each bite just for you.
And I didn't say you wrote the article... Just that the "facts" are idiotic, and the fact that you are trying to use them to prop up your ridiculous stance of smoking in public is HILARIOUS!! lol "Remember, it's not a lie if YOU believe it" George Costanza |

Larry Tate did not say he eats there daily, or even weekly; he said he ate there over the weekend. And I've eaten at Waffle House, too. You can get eggs and dry toast - without bacon or ham - and have a healthy meal. But smoke away, Rielly; you'll probably be okay. While you're at it, if you live in an older home, how about taking something useful like a circular or concrete saw to the asbestos insulation in your attic and lead-based paint on your walls just for fun. When all the stuff is stirred up, inhale. Repeat if needed. After all, asbestos and lead paint were safe up until the 1970's, too. |
