Re: Palliative Care
I have first hand experience on this subject. Two doctors went against my mother's power of attorney and continued to give her a certain medicine after the family requested it to be stopped because of the harm. One doctor told me the facts face to face on how this Palliative Care is carried out with a patient. My intent with this information is to inform & protect elderly & sick people. No one has the right to end a life! No family member or doctor!

If Shoals Hospital closes can you imagine how many could possibly die on their way to Helen Keller if a train is blocking the tracks.

The hospice is for people that have 6 months or less to live that don't have any chance of getting better. My dad was under hospice care up until his death and I applaud them for what they did for my dad. All the decisions were up to the family, we didn't have to give him anything that we didn't want to. Hospice is their to keep the patient comfortable as possible and out of pain because there isn't anything else that can be done. The hospice isn't there to help someone die they are there to comfort them until it is their time to go.

Some doctors DO usurp wishes of family members....

My father had a bad reaction to an anesthesia he was given during surgery and failed to wake after several days in the hospital. They wanted to discharge him anyway back home (he lived with us and I didn't want him to be admitted to a nursing home after he left the hospital- I wanted to be with him 24/7). I was my fathers durable POA and asked that he be given a feeding tube or NG tube for me to administer fluids, nutrition and the antibiotics he was being given IV in the hospital to fight the pneumonia he acquired there to give his body more time to process the anesthesia to see if he would eventually wake up and start taking things by mouth again and was REFUSED by the doctor (who never asked about a living will, btw) as my father had a history of dementia and was "terminal". Instead, he was discharged with an ORAL prescription for antibiotics that he had no way of taking (much less any kind of nutrition or hydration) and he started worsening within 24 hours of discharge and died about a week after came home. Cause of death was pneumonia. Maybe even with nutrition, fluids, and continued antibiotics he would have died, but I'll never know. Pneumonia was the official cause of death. It was the most horrible time of my life, watching this, and it took several days for him to pass. Doc, I hope you're reading this. I'll bet you thought you were safe, but I'm still deciding whether or not to sue your sorry self. You're not out of the woods yet.

This isn't the same Dr. that was put in prison for assisting suicide is it. Salty I wouldn't let that doctor off the hook I would sue him for everything he's got. Sometimes suing someone is the only way to make them pay for what they have done. So sorry for your loss Salty Frowner Money will not bring your dad back but that doctor needs to pay for what he has done.

No, 2each. I went back and omitted that name, because while it it used often to generically describe doctors who cause death it is actually a person and I don't want to get sued for using his name. Eeker

Not all doctors are created equal. This one is in the "paternal" mindset. They used to all be that way, but younger ones usually aren't.

With the way the 'healthcare' industry is 'managed' these days, I no longer have any respect for doctors OR hospitals.

All of the hospitals in this area should be embarrassed and ashamed. Staff infection is rampant in 2008. Doctors are equally to blame because they protect each others mistakes and refuse to do the right thing by their patients.

Its no wonder that healthcare in the Shoals is a running joke, and its no mystery why patients continue to run to Huntsville and Birmingham for important procedures.

Maybe these doctors do not want any part of Coffee Health Group. If I were a doctor I would not be affiliated with a group that allows "passive euthanasia" and "mercy killing" in their facility under the concept of Palliative Care. Many citizens with incurable illnesses are being drugged and starved to death with Palliative Care. GET THE FACTS! It is happening in the Shoals area. Certain doctors and hospice agencies are ending lives and playing God. I have the information and evidence.
Local elected officials know this is happening and they are doing nothing to stop it. The two people running for the Mayor of Florence know that taxpaying citizens are losing their lives in this manner. Some thoughts to ponder before the election!

this has to be the most idiotic post i have read in a long time. Consider yourself challenged right here right now! Since you "claim" to have the evidence,,bring it on NOW.
Palliative care is the most humane way to ALLOW someone who is dying with terminal illness to leave this world with a bit a dignity versus being tortured to the very end to appease a bunch of medically uneducated relatives .
Bring on that proof,,I,and several other medical personel here on these forums would love to see this "evidence you claim to have.

Salty, I'm sorry this happened to you & for the loss of your Dad. I would say follow your heart as far as what you need to do.

Palliative Care is one of the best things this area has done. In Dec 07 my mother suffered numerous stokes that incapacitated all areas of her brain. She was unreponsive and there was very little chance she would wake up. Dr. Holden who is a critical specialist met with me, showed me the CT scans and gave his recommendations. We elected to make mother a DNR and move her to the Palliative Care unit on six floor. Needless to say we were all in shock. The nurses and staff on that floor are awesome. The provided wonderful comfort care for our mother. Mother never did respond at all and passed away quitely on a Sunday morning. She was offered all the comfort care measures there are, as were we. We were able to spend our mothers last days with her, telling her we loved her and that we would be ok. Her doctor, Dr. Richard Cunningham, made daily rounds and listened to all of concerns and questions. Palliative Care is a wonderful concept. I've been a nurse for sixteen years and do highly recommend it. You can't blame anyone for hoping against hope, but there comes a time when its time to let go. Not rush a death, but don't prolong it either. Offer comfort, love and support to the patient and the family. To even hint that palliative euthanasia or mercy killing is whats happening on this floor is ridiculous.
