Hall of Famer |
--Huntsville, AL
"I have information that she was smoking crack during the chase." - Assistant U.S. Attorney David Estes who spoke Monday at the federal courthouse in Huntsville Attorney Estes is the prosecutor for the case which would have been United States v Valorie Cox. Ms. Cox plead guilty to second degree murder in the May 30th vehicular homicide death of 39-year-old NASA employee Darren Spurlock on Redstone Arsenal. In the agreement, she acknowledged she caused Mr. Spurlock's death by running a red traffic light at the intersection of Martin and Rideout roads, and then crashing into his automobile while attempting to evade members of the Madison-Morgan County Strategic Counterdrug Team seeking to arrest her. Huntsville Police suspected she had participated in a drug deal near Patton Road and Drake Avenue before they followed her onto the Redstone Arsenal in a chase that exceeded 90mph. She confessed to smoking crack all day before the tragedy. In exchange for her guilty plea, which spares the federal government the cost of trial, Ms. Cox agreed to serve 30 years in federal prison, and waived her right to any appeal. Ms. Cox widowed Kelly Spurlock, wife of the deceased, Darren, and mother of their two young sons. |
