The most annoying thing that Shoals drivers do is misuse the left lane. It is for TURNING and PASSING, not driving 10 miles under the speed limit.

My favorite idiot drivers are the ones who pull out in front of me going about 50 mph only to slow down to 5 or 10 miles below the speed limit - especially when no one behind me and they could have waited 10 more seconds to pull out behind me! "Get the rope!"

This is from my blog post http://www.kontansplace.com/2008/03/14/seriously-are-yo...erent-shade-of-green. It had been a difficult driving day in the Shoals.

Seriously, are you waiting for a different SHADE of GREEN!
We have random drug testing. I would like to advocate random drivers tests. You have to renew every few years and I think there should be the requirement that drivers should have to submit to periodic drivers tests.

Lets go over a few things…
First and foremost, IT’S THE PEDAL ON THE RIGHT!

2. The stop sign is there for a reason, observe it.

3. I regret to inform you that the stop sign will not be turning green to signal that you can go.

4. A four way stop is not a two for one deal people. Two people from your line do not get to go for every single car in mine. It does not work that way…sorry.

5. Pay attention when it is your turn! Again, the sign will not be turning green.

6. However, the LIGHT will and when it does please do not be picky about the shade. It too will not be changing or blinking at you to signal it is time to go. The light changes from yellow, to red, to green. That’s it.

7. A green light does not mean put on your brakes. Yes, use caution while going through the light but DO NOT SLAM ON YOUR BRAKES!

8. By the way, the stick on the left…yeah that is a turn signal, or as we call it around here- “the blinker.” It indicates that you will be turning either left or right. Try using it.

9. I appreciate that you want to show off the southern hospitality and let that car that has been waiting forever merge into traffic. Yes, it seems like the polite thing to do. However, the twenty people behind you do not agree. The other car made the decision to enter at that intersection, let them wait it out.

10. FURTHERMORE, stopping in the left lane to allow a car from oncoming traffic to turn in front of you AND the advancing right lane is not only stupid it endangers everyone and you can be held accountable for your stupidity. Again, it isn’t polite to the twenty people who had to slam on their brakes behind you or will be involved in the head on collision that has a strong potential of occurring.

11. Left lane fast. Right lane slow.

12. Speed limits. If I’m going it get off my butt.

13. It’s rain people, drive with caution not amazement.

I’m sure there are many more, but this will do for now. Feel free to add your own.

OK fine…not stupid, they simply lack essential knowledge. Doesn’t that sound much nicer?

I don't agree with number nine. Some individuals have to be at certain places at certain times (physician's offices, etc.). I always try to let them in line.

I do resent people who drive the same route every day (and know that a certain lane is closed) who pull up in the wrong lane to save time and expect someone to let them in.

I also also shudder at those who will stop and let 20 or 30 in line. Let every driver in line admit one, so no one is extremely late (or irritated).

I hate it when people misuse the turning lane. They do this when they cannot turn left - so they pull out & hang out in the turning lane until they can pull into traffic. If I need to use the turning lane to, oh I don't know, TURN & you are in it, that's a problem!

If you need to turn left & can't...Turn right, then turn left onto side street to turn around & get yourself headed in the direction you need to be in.

What's really annoying is if I'm in the turning lane turning left & someone has stuck their behind in the turning lane facing me & thinks they have the right-of-way. Hello! If you are misusing the turning lane, you do NOT have the right-of-way.

Thanks, Dream. I needed that.

Stopping the flow of traffic to be polite to someone waiting at a stop sign is rude to the people behind you and dangerous for them AND the person pulling out. I question the legality of this act as well.

If traffic is stopped and you want to let them merge in by turning right...no issue. Turn left, BIG issue. Danger-danger-danger. If traffic is not stopped you have just endangered the person trying to merge and everyone behind you as they have to break. Never know, they may be in a hurry to get to an appointment too.

I'm not sure that is a misuse of the lane, but I do see your point. Unfortunately, some of the streets are so messed up here that you can't simple turn right and go around.

Here's another one...use the merging (acceleration) lane to merge.

You have a valid point; however, if the person(s) behind me are unable to stop, that is their fault. I've been rear-ended (not under those conditions), but I've never rear-ended anyone myself.

In the event of a collision of this type it is possible you would be held liable in courtesy crash if the person you let into traffic decided to turn left and they were crashed into by either an oncoming car or someone in the left lane who wasn't stopping for no apparent reason.

I hate driving around here!!! The slowpoke left laners drive me nuts! Oh and the ones who do not have a clue what yield or merge is. At the end of Cox Creek Pkwy at Savannah Hwy they just bow up and stop. If they get rearended it would be their own fault! They have a lane to GO in. And driving 10 miles with your left turn signal on only to make a quick right turn with no warning at all! You can tell it is a retirement community!

Oh and I do not agree with #12. If you are going the speed limit and you are in the left lane scoot over! If we choose to pass you and get a ticket it would be our business. You are not a speed bump to slow everybody down. Get outta the way!

Driving Cox Creel is a nightmare any time of day. I had rather drive Chattanooga or Nashville than Florence.
