Secretary of State Beth Chapman Calls Bedford Out

"The two words you never want to hear come out of Senator Roger Bedford's mouth are, 'Trust me,'" Secretary of State Beth Chapman said today.

Due to a substitution requested by Senator Roger Bedford, the Alabama Legislature has failed to pass legislation to allow military and overseas voters to request and cast their ballots in a more accessible manner in the 2010 elections.

"He said more than once, to more than one person, that he was only going to 'change the date.' What he has done is single-handedly stop the military from having an improved process by which to cast their votes in 2010," Chapman said.

House Bill 711, created by the Military and Overseas Voting Task Force, would have made the voting process more accessible for military and overseas voters in 2010. The task force was comprised of citizens from both parties and all walks of life and chaired by Secretary of State Beth Chapman. The bill would have allowed for additional methods of submission other than the postal service, including the use of commercial carriers like FedEx and UPS, as well as secure fax.

The bill passed the Alabama House of Representatives on an 89-3 vote, then went to the Senate. Senator Bedford requested a substitution on the Senate floor, which in his words, "only changed the date on the bill." The bill passed unanimously.

However, Bedford's amendment was more than 'changing a date'. It would keep congressional candidates from transferring any federal money into state campaigns, which has nothing to do with military voting.

The original version of HB711 had plenty of supporters. "We could not have made it as far as we did without the cooperation of our representatives and senators." Chapman said.

Chapman hopes the soldiers deploying from Senator Bedford's district will remember that their senator stopped the legislation which would have assisted them in voting while serving overseas.

Alabama has the highest number of military members per capita serving in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other state in the nation.

"Alabama is a national leader in the effort to provide electronic means for requesting ballots and casting votes for military and overseas voters. We will continue to work to provide these essential services to our men and women overseas. It should be our highest goal to defend the rights of those who defend us," Chapman said.

roger bedford. A perfect example of, "Throw the bums out! Except for our bum." I booed him at a Cancer Survivors event because he had the gall to go up to the podium and make a political speech, trying to draw support using the fact that he had had cancer. He has NO shame.

Consensus of opinion up here in NW Alabama is;
My Pappy was a democrat, and my Grandpappy was a Democrat, that means I am a democrat and will vote for him again. Horse Feathers, just keep sending him back. Hell No, I will not vote for him under any circumstances, but I will Vote.

I would like to live in his district so I could vote against the scheming, self-aggrandizing weasel that he is. Bedford is a disgrace to this state and so are the prople of his senatorial district who keep sending the varmint back into office. I vote Democratic about 99% of the time, but it would be easy for me to vote Republican, or Socialist, or almost anything else to send Bedford packing!

I am a Yellow Dog Democrat and I would vote for a Yellow Dog but I would under no circumstances vote for Roger Bedford. Thank God he had the sense to decide to not run for Governor. He has been re-introducing himself to me for 30 years and he remains nothing but an arrogant self-serving politician. The only good thing I can say about him is he has a lovely and charming wife. She could have done better.

Ditto. Love Maudie(sp?). Roger is a bore.

Just what DO you consider a "democrat?" A communist? Guess that's why you're always available to service o'guano in ANY way possible.

Bedford is a slime ball who doesn't take care of his responsibilities.

Make that a double!
