It is this way in many schools. I was told that it is because the children's safety comes before their privacy. With the door closed a child can be assualted and all sorts of other heinous acts that you don't want to think about. With the door open (or no door at all) the children are safer from being assualted.
It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. |

Seriously TSC, when was the last time anyone heard of a child at L.E. Willson being assaulted in the bathroom stall?
My son holds hes bowel movements until he gets home and that is medically dangerous if done too often. I know this cause I asked a doctor about it when a school in Fl.did not provide stalls, they ended up having to do so because of the childs right to privacy. Seriously Ms. Wonka, I have never heard of a child being anything at that school, as I don't keep up with the goings-ons at LE Wilson.
I do keep up with my own child's school, and I do know that your child (or any child) does not have a right to privacy in the bathroom. Period. If your child cannot move the bowels without a door, and there is no door, then s/he needs to adjust their diet and schedule accordingly. Your child, my child and every child does have a right to safety in the bathrooms and every other area of the school. If not having doors means that a child isn't raped, forced to eat feces, or some other atrocious act in the restroom then so be it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. |

If you read national papers and read national news you would hear about these things. You would also be thankful that our schools are being proactive in preventing them from happening:
Federal lawsuit alleges disabled girl was raped in school bathroom Girl reports rape by fellow student at Sarasota High 10 Year Old Male Student Reports Being Raped In School Bathroom Student Accused Of Raping Girl In School Bathroom Rapes at schools happen often, and often go unreported. The above examples are just a few. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. |

I understand your concerns, but taking the doors off the stalls will not prevent these things from happening. No one is going to harm a child in front of witnesses,if anyone is in the bathroom they will not try anything.
The schools I worked in used a buddy system, no child ever went anywhere alone on campus. In addition, all the new schools have been designed to have bathrooms in the classroom up until third grade. I was told by my principal that Federal laws prohibit the schools from removing the stall doors due to the students right to privacy when going to the bathroom. Again, the schools do a lot of things here that violate Federal Laws. Chocolate...I must have chocolate......NOOOOW!!!!!!! |

There is NO Federal Law that gives children a right to privacy - in the bathroom or otherwise - at any time or place. If you can find it, post it. You have been given some extreme misinformation. See Ward v. State of Florida and / or read this: www.ago.state.al.us/schools/guidefinal.PDF
and Board of Education vs. Earls. Children have NO RIGHT to privacy at school. Children do have a right to be safe in the bathroom. How does the "buddy system" keep a kid safe? What if the buddy is the attacker? Taking the doors off is not going to prevent ALL assaults. The goal is to prevent as many as possible. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. |

T S C, did you not read the last paragraph on page 6 of the link you sent? It clearly states that children have an increased reasonable right to privacy while in the bathroom.
This article also cautions educators about violating a students Fourth Amendment Rights as well as their First Amendment Rights. Hmmm, you stated that kids have no rights while at school, you want to rethink that position? Were you ever raped in a school bathroom,or did you rape someone else, or maybe you are close to someone who was raped or beat up in a school bathroom? You obviously feel very passionately about this issue, I was just wondering why. Also I asked you when was the last time a student at L.E. Willson in Sheffield, Al. was sexually assualted or tortured in the bathroom of that school. Just to clarify, the article says at the bottom of page 6: When a bathroom stall is equipped with a door, individuals in the stall are accorded a reasonable expectation of privacy.
Hence no doors, no expectation of privacy. So, there you go. Since you decided to get personal and rude in your last post, I will not continue to discuss things with you. Best regards. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. |

I have to agree with TSC on this one.
Kids today have proven to ALL of us just what they are capable of. Maybe not right here in this area................>YET!!! But what IF they start? What then?? Protection first, privacy later. I would MUCH rather my child come HOME at the end of the day and go to the bathroom at home, than be laying in a puddle of blood in school, or traumatized that someone else was. Laws have and ARE STILL changing in schools because of the meanness going on. I will side with ANY law that PROTECTS. |

On the bowel movement thing. I raised 3 kids, and not one single one of them would do that in school, WITH DOORS.
They ALL waited until they got home because they just didn't feel comfortable with that bodily function around their friends. |
