I have been trying to find something new to do this Halloween. I have searched online and tried listening to local radio stations to see if anything is going on but have not heard of anything yet. I am wondering if there is going to be an adult halloween party in florence this year? i remember one year there was one at the Conference Center....also i was wondering what suggestions people might have for haunted houses, corn mazes and things like that?? i like to be scared but not totally grossed out so i figured a haunted corn maze might be best but cannot seem to find one in the area...does anyone know of one i could go to...that is not tooo far away?? any suggests would be great and much appreciated! Thanks a bunch! Smiler

Sadonna, here is a link about Graystone Manor in Killen.
There will also be tours of the grounds of the old Sweetwater Mansion in Florence.
I don't know of any Halloween Parties.

Thanks, Autumn from me, I sent it to my kids and friends. We enjoyed it year before last, but missed last year. I also like the one in Goodsprings, Limestone County, on 99 near Salem.
When our kids were little we used to put hey in a wagon, ride them through the pasture and have friends hiding, dressed up as spooks. It was lots of fun.

If you don't mind driving a little some of my friends work for the botanical gardens in H'ville. They have a kid friendly scarecrow trail. I think there may be a maze nearby.

Then there's the ghost tour that is every night the last week in Oct. at Wilson Park, but I don't think its for small kids.

there are 2 corn mazes in huntsville that i know of. one is on highway 72 not too far after it changes from i-565, not sure where the other one is, but i've heard it advertised on 95.1. i've always wanted to go looking for spooks, and i used to have access to a website that listed these supposedly haunted places in alabama buy that site is now blocked by our IT department. and last year me and my friends had our own halloween bash, it was fun. and i know places in huntsville have halloween parties, but with florence's reputation i doubt that'll be the case but you never know.

TW0907, do you mean a website that listed haunted places so people could go to them and be amateur ghost hunters? sounds interesting

yes, it listed places that were supposed to be haunted. a lot of them were public places, may have been some few private estates. it was interesting.

There's a corn maze out towards Russellville. I don't know exactly where, but I saw a poster for it yesterday.

I have never been to a corn maze. That sounds like fun. Halloween was always a huge event when my girls were little. The older ones still talk about how embarressed they were when I came to school as a chicken and had their little sister dressed as an egg. They are older now and one of them says she's afraid that she will never be the fun mom that I was. She still talks about the hit she was in the first grade as a cave women. She had milk bone dog biscuits for earrings and necklace. The Wilma Flintstone style fur dress all made by mom....me.

You DO sound like a fun mom. I made my Halloween costumes myself, as soon as I got old enough to weild scissors, needle and thread. My mother kept all the old clothes, nightgowns, towels, etc. that got holes in them or were stained beyond washing. A few weeks before Halloween, I'd go and rummage around in the big pile of discards at the end of the hall, up in the top of the little closet there. It was a treasure trove! One year I was a housewife in curlers and cold cream, wearing one of mom's old bathrobes and slippers. I've been a hobo wearing one of daddy's old torn shirts, pants held up by a rope belt, wearing mismatched socks and shoes, and with chimney soot smeared on my face. I was a rich lady one year in a fancy day gown from my grandmother, a wig, elbow gloves, high heels and a purse to catch candy in.

I look at kids today and wonder WHERE is their imagination? They all just want to go to these Halloween theme stores that pop up like mushrooms for a couple months before Halloween, and buy a ready made costume the same as 20 other kids are going to be wearing. More parents should be like mine were - encouraging their kids to come up with costumes on their own, or like you mommer, encouraging the ideas and helping to make the costume a reality.

Everything you mentioned I can so relate to. Hobo was always one of the fun things to make. You are so right, parents should really show their kids what you can do with what you have. There have been so many times that they have come home and said, "tomorrow is (for instance nifty fifties day) you just go to the closet and create something. Some were harder than that, but I can't think of one right off hand.

My favorite Halloween memory was a yearly tradition of visiting my Uncle Holt who lived in the house where the Florence Children's Museum is now. My brother and I were probably his only trick or treaters and he always had an array of candy bars for us.

Make that a double!

I saw on WAFF-48 where the Good Springs Haunted House was closed by the State Fire Marshal's Office. The last I heard as of earlier this week was they were trying to re-open in a different location, but as of Tuesday, that too had not been approved.
