Hall of Famer |
I saw the Nicholas Cage movie, Knowing, this past weekend. I was really surprised, pleasantly, but I must say that it left me feeling a little depressed. If you have not seen it, it is one of the best sci-fi movies to come along in a while, much better than last year's remake of the The Day the Earth Stood Still.
It is not preachy, but there is a good message in the movie. I do not want to divulge too much of the plot and ruin it for you if you have not seen it, but it makes for some good discussion points. I guess the "depressing" part near the end of the movie, is the fact that in true fate there is little to nothing that we can do to affect what is going on around us, even if we know the inevitable, so it is best we be prepared for it. Seeing the human reaction by most during the end made me feel sad for us, since I saw a similar reaction in past events even here in the Shoals, and cannot imagine how bad it would be in a major metropolitan region. Anyone else seen the movie, or have adesire to see it? "Fate seldom calls upon us at a moment of our choosing." - Optimus Prime |

I will watch it again on DVD, just to see some of the things that I thought about after the movie, when my wife and I talked about it. The special effects however were really quite impressive on the big screen.

Am I stupid or something? Because I just did not get the ending??? I really enjoyed it up to the last 20 minutes or so....What is the Tree supposed to represent? And was it aliens or angels?

I saw it and will agree it was a good movie. My jaw dropped at the end when I saw that tree. I knew by then it had a message from the scene with his parents and sister but that last scene really clinched it. |

It was the tree of life and you have to make the call about the angels/aliens thing. |

SPOILER ALERT...so if you have not seen it do not read below.
I don't really know whether they were supposed to be aliens or angels, perhaps they are the same, if you read the first chapter of Ezekial, he describes that scene and the four "beings" almost like they were depicted in the movie. I think the tree is supposed to be the Tree of Life, or possibly the Tree which held the Knowledge of Good and Evil, who knows, but it is pretty symbolic that it probably was meant to be liken to the story of Genesis, the new beginning. It is pretty obvious that the final scene with Cage was the end of mankind on Earth, I don't think anyone was going to survive that, and there was the van there on the street which was saying that "Jesus would save them". I guess it was disturbing in a way, the destruction was pretty horrific, and to think there was no warning, like we have been told in Sunday school. I wondered if the significance of Cage's character being "wet" when he woke up, after his son left, was a symbolism of baptism?? It was also nice to see him reconcile with his wife's parents, one of which was the preacher, and who had accepted their fate. I think the movie was pretty deep for a "sci-fi" movie, besides like I said the special effects were pretty awesome. "Fate seldom calls upon us at a moment of our choosing." - Optimus Prime |

Lucinda was the warning. There is a lot of symbolism but I missed the baptism one. It makes perfect sense as in the next scene Cage's character tells his father "he knows" and you can tell he knows.

Yeah, I too saw the symbolism for Lucinda.
Also since Caleb, the sons name was sort of a mix of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Prolly putting too much symbolism in the movie, but it was too me a much deeper movie than just a mindless disaster flick. I guess if you are a spiritual person, it does make you think.
