I took my precious daughter shopping a few days ago and thought I'd been magically transported to back when I was her age! Guess what we saw at the mall!

*Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers
*Care Bear tees
*Guess? jeans
*Neon t-shirts (and sneakers!)

What the heck? Are Coca-Cola shirts back, too? What about those HyperColor shirts? Duckhead sweatshirts? Man... I feel old.

Duckhead sweatshirts, are they out of style? I still have one.

and don't forget the yucky patterned, polyester shirts that go with the leisure suits....and aviator glasses.

i'm still getting a kick out of seeing the kids in wide bell bottoms that drag the ground. it makes me feel like i'm a teen in the early 70's again.

I love and hate shopping. I'm 21 and hate the fashion. I don't want shorts that show what they're supposed to be covering, but I don't want granny shorts either. I want a shirt that comes to my pants, I'm past trying to show off. Unless I want to be the center of attention and I have special clothes for that, that you can only buy at the body store in huntsville mall. Wink

Bree, start your own fashion...no need to follow the trends. Smiler Also, in you are not doing this already, shop in departments other than juniors. Sometimes the Misses Dept. has the same look but not made skin tight. Trust me, all us women feel your pain, even us older women.

My daughter is 12 and for the life of me, I can't find any shorts for her with more than a 1" inseam! And what is with the rise in the shorts (and pants) these days? Isn't it supposed to come up a little higher than your behind? Shopping for her makes me wanna buy a sewing machine...

And Bree - I feel your pain. I want some shorts that cover the top and bottom of my tush and a little of my leg, too. I want a shirt I can tuck into the shorts described above or wear untucked without exposing my belly if I gotta scratch my nose. If anyone knows where to buy such clothes, please let me know!!!! Summer clothes shopping - uuuuugggghhhhh Smiler

J.Crew shorts come in various lengths, and their shirts are made longer than normal so you should have no problem tucking them in or worrying about them riding up. A little pricey, though.

It seems like most of the department stores in the Shoals just have the hoochie juniors department, and the department with mom jeans and muumuus, with nothing in between for those of us who are out of our teens but still want to look attractive. I would go on an expedition to Birmingham or Huntsville, try some stuff on at some of the larger department stores and specialty stores (J.Crew, Banana Republic, etc.), and then once you know what works, you can shop online. I find good stuff at T.J. Maxx too, but Regency Square Mall is pretty much a waste of time, from what I saw the last time I was there.

L.L. Bean Online has good stuff (or the catalog for that matter); and Old Navy has good stuff too. Sure, they have the shorty shorts and belly shirts that I keep having to steer my TEN-YEAR-OLD away from, but they have more appropriately cut stuff as well.

I LOVE the '80's I could be the poster child! Class of 89 here.
Did anyone see the new MAX-FACTOR eye shadow ad with Carmen Electra in it? (yellows, purples, pinks, reds!) If that wasn't a flashback nothing was! I have a 15 year old daughter that I can't wait to help dress- already she is refusing to wear leggings?!?! She is however a little heavy- is it me or have sizes changed?
I am so glad to find other mom's like me that do not want everything showing on my daughter's bodies. Eeker

Class of 88 and Yes, I've seent that Max Factor ad.... LOVE IT! Can you believe it's coming back? Especially after seeing the Jennifer Anniston cut make everyone so anti 80's hair... gah those were hard times for me in the salon to keep my mouth shut and watch all the young girls do the same thing... straight, straight, straight. Nothing wrong with it, just got bored with it.

As for finding clothes.. I love TJ Maxx! As I near the middle age mark (NO, don't tell me I'm there yet).. I've found I'm really liking Liz Baker's cuts and styles in clothing and that lil' store Holiday's (by Kmart in Florence) is a nice place with nice prices for name brand clothing. Though brand doesn't mean everything all the time, I've learned some brands are very good quality. I like to prowl a thrift shop here and there too... found some WOWZOR good deals as well as some of my favorite pieces.

My daughter is almost 18 now, and likes to shop at Hot Topic (some of their stuff is cool, some is not), American Eagle Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy and TJ Maxx. When she was 15ish she was hard pressed to dress to impress those boys... we had many one sided conversations during this time...... Brittney Spears... thank you.... she has since had her heart broken, realized Mom knew a little more than she gave her credit for and has become a little more conservative, in a healthy kind of way. I've taught her to be proud of herself and not feel overly conscious or pressured to look like Barbie. I think I did okay, she's doing great. She's asked me a lot about the 80's styles and what it was like. It's nice to share with her and her be interested.

Main thing she needed help from me on was proper fitting of her bra and undergarments. Good fits there go a long way in overall presentation.

I just try to make her feel like it's her idea when I make a suggestion. It's been rough, but bringing up things sometimes was hard for her to accept, I had to find a way to make it easier for her to take my criticism and still feel like she's in charge of herself.

I thought I would NEVER put back on a pair of straight leg jeans but I did the other day with some of the new ballerina shoes that we used to wear. Rue 21 has great clothes for my daughter and they are sooo cheap. I hate the Yoke pants ........so ugly and the big fat plastic beads and earrings in bright colors are tacky. I guess I have become a little to accustom to "real" jewelry like gold and diamonds to replace them with Cindi Lauper.............(sp)
