If you need some "ooomph" in your hair try Pantene's texturizing spray hair wax. Easy to use, not sticky in your hair once it dries and it leaves your hair shiny.

All righty then. Let me describe my funky hair. I have straight, fine, but thick, long hair down around the middle of my back (at the bra strap if you will). I have about 20% gray if I don't get out the bottle every 6 weeks or so. I have a LOT of frizzies and I just couldn't fathom why. Then I went to Rozhe's and Monica dearest cut my hair.
OK, first ladies, check your brushing habits. I was breaking my hair in my morning rush. I used a really nice ceramic brush with metal bristles and it was BAD for my hair. Snap, snap, snap. And of course, I brushed from the scalp to the end and just pulled those darn little tangles right out. Snap, snap, snap. So, Monica gave me a killer cut (thank you again) and some advice. First, I am now using a pick to detangle my hair while the conditioner is working on it in the shower. Then I gently towel dry it. I usually am a bit rough with the towel, but I want my hair dry now. So I bought some Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Shampoo & Conditioner. It makes my hair hold less water. Very weird, but really cool!!! Also, Redkin makes this stuff that smells a bit odd, but makes my hair super duper shiney and not frizzy - it is called Rough Paste. It feels like thick hand lotion, but it dissappears right into my hair and it doesn't look greasy at all. And it keeps the broken peices laying flat all day long! Woo Hoo!!! So, if your hair is in a funky mood, go see Monica at Rohze's (or however you spell it, over by the Compass Bank, behind Wal-Mart, down from Pet Depot - on Seville Street). She's a nice chick and she does good hair! |

Monica, I think you are my new Hair Guru. I did my hair like you told me to and even with the humidity today it looks fabulous! It used to balloon out and do this Gilda Radner frizz out thing, but not today! Sweet!

OK Monica -- so here's where I need help. I have a great cut -- like mostly all one length with just a few layers mixed in. I have fine shoulder length hair that goes flat by the end of the day. I can't go a day without washing it because it looks oily and feels worse. So what can I do to help with this and also, what can I do to stop the static issue thta comes up?
TSC -- you can use a plastic wide tooth comb to help with those tangels --- been doing that for years. May be easier than using a pick..Love it mine is pink and purple... |

Okay DixieChik... I'm assuming you have shoulder length hair with long layers and possibly some face framing vertical layers. Okay, got my vision of your cut, tell me if I'm wrong. Next, you tell me your hair is fine and looks oily if not washed everyday, and it goes flat by the end of the day... and it gets static. I'm visualizing that you like your volumized and bodiful, but not overly styled. I'm going to hit on several things I would suggest, without seeing your hair it's a lil' harder, but it's a start and a great possibility that one or all of my tips will help you. I don't think shampooing daily is a bad thing as long as you remoisturize your hair (not your scalp). I have to shampoo daily myself or my scalp feels funky and a bit oily. First let's start with a balanced shampoo that will thoroughly cleanse your hair and scalp without stripping and leaving the ends of you hair dry (dryness conducts static) and to be extra demanding, let's ask for a little oomph from it cause we want it to be volumized! Wooohooo! We women want it all, don't we? LOL I think your shampoo and conditioner is your main problem, so this is very important. I don't like to tell people to use professional products because most think they are overpriced blah blah, however, they do work. So I'm going to suggest Matrix Amplify Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner for you 2 days on, 1 day off. On the day off, I would like to see you using a scalp treatment type of shampoo such as Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo/Conditioner. And yes, you have to use conditioner. It's important to use more than one shampoo or your hair becomes immune to it, I can give you a detailed explanation if you would like, let me know. Rule of Thumb, Words of Wisdom.... Shampoo your Scalp, Condition your Ends. Not vice versa... it does make a difference. Okay, now on to styling. I'm assuming you shampoo and blowdry in the morning. I'd like to suggest Matrix Amplify Root Lifter applied evenly at the scalp area. Also add a bit of Matrix Amplify Gel Wax lightly skimmed throughout your hair, that will go a long way on oomph, style memory, shine, and static control. And no, it won't make it oily or tacky feeling. Less is best on any product that you use, you can always add a lil' more the next time till you find your comfort zone. You can take a look at all these things at the Matrix website, here's a link straight to the Amplify section. http://www.matrix.com/products/amplify/ Also, here's a link for the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree stuff, and their Lemon Sage is awesome switch-up for you too. http://www.paulmitchell.com/Products/TeaTree/Care/Pages/Care.aspx Now that we got our prescribed products applied, I suggest drying your hair upside down till your hair is 80% dry, then use a natural bristle round brush the last bit to set in your style. This will give you max volume root to end. You can use a lil' hairspray or styling spritz to set your hair daily or for special occasions, but it's not necessary if you don't like sprays. I like to use a wee bit to help lock out humidity, but some days... well, I'm a woman and I change my mind. Let me know how it turns out... or if you have more questions. I'm excited to hear back about your results! Getting the ph of you scalp balanced with balanced shampoo/conditioner designed for your hair type is your best approach. Anything else is going to be a hit or miss type thing.
Think about scalpcare like you do skincare... it's all about the balance. The cleansing and the moisturizing are vital. If it's too dry, the production of extra oil to compensate are the result. This also leads to static. I know it doesn't sound right, moisturize to stop the production of oil.. but it's true. Rinsing thoroughly with cool water is another trick of the trade... it gets the conditioner out easier and contracts the hydrogen bonds in the hair making it smoother and shinier... I also feel it's good for the pores of the scalp. Only other thing to avoid daily shampoo is possibly the root lifter products... they may help keep it less oily. I know they make a 'dry shampoo' for people who are unable to shampoo, though I'm not sure where to find it. That would be a little bit quicker, though I don't think that's the answer you are looking for... With a little practice, you can get your styling routine down to 15 mins max. I'm with you on not wanting to get up any earlier, I'm not a morning person either.
